The pilgrim embarks on a tour of temples, collecting stamps or tokens symbolizing each of the gods along the way. In Tokyo alone, there are 24 such routes - a popular 'gap year' destination for students.

Tokens or other talismans are a popular way of ensuring good luck on your travels all over the world. On the Camino de Santiago - the route the old pilgrims of Europe took in the Middle Ages to the great Catholic cathedral of Santiago in northern Spain, they took stones (as now) for good fortune along the way which they would then deliver at the end of their journey.

There is a superstitious saying that predicts bad luck if you travel when your path is crossed by a monk, a hare or a howling dog . . until you have eaten your next meal.And it is supposed to be bad luck to turn around and go back after starting out on your journey. The evil spell may be broken, however, by making a cross on the ground and spitting on it.
An old saying (particularly prevalent amongst sailors and shepherds) is:
