Some school children or students use more common talismans such as coins or cuddly toys. Students in ancient Greece used to wear garlands of rosemary around their necks, or braided rosemary into their hair to improve their memory during exams. Rosemary has been used at weddings, funerals, and even to ward off the plague. Sir Thomas Moore believed the herb to be sacred for remembrance. In Hamlet, Ophelia said, "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance." According to legend, rosemary was used to awaken Sleeping Beauty.

In olden times, because it can change colour in different lights and temperatures, it was used as a test of innocence or, in the case of women, female virtue. If the owner of the stone wished to prove her fidelity, she had to wear the sapphire for three hours of daylight whilst the colour was observed.
